About

Nova Star is a Naarm/Melbourne-based textile designer working across knit, weave, print, and installation. Her practice is driven by a love of textiles as a medium for storytelling, self-expression, and connection.

Drawing inspiration from women's histories, traditional craft techniques, and contemporary culture, she creates work that explores themes of femininity, strength, care, and identity. Through material experimentation and slow making, Star seeks to celebrate the value of handcrafted textiles and the knowledge embedded within them.

Alongside her design practice, she runs Femme Fibre, a small independent label creating playful, sculptural knitted accessories and one-of-a-kind pieces. Every item is designed and handmade in small batches from her home studio, embracing the individuality and character that comes from handcrafted production.

Star’s background spans both creative and commercial textile design, from developing experimental textile collections and exhibiting work internationally to working within the industry on textile developments and production. She has exhibited in Copenhagen and Sweden and continues to explore the possibilities of knitwear, craft, and contemporary textile practice.

Whether through wearable pieces, installations, or experimental textiles, her work aims to foster joy, curiosity, and a deeper appreciation for the labour, creativity, and care woven into every textile.

Thank you for being here xx

Background

Nova Star holds a Bachelor of Textile Design and a Certificate IV in Textile Design Development and Production. During her studies, she completed an exchange at the Swedish School of Textiles in Borås, Sweden, where she expanded her practice through experimental approaches to knit, weave, and contemporary textile design.

Nova Star is currently undertaking a 10-month Craft Victoria Fellowship, recognising and supporting the ongoing development of her contemporary textile practice. The fellowship provides space for continued research, experimentation, and exploration of textile processes.

Alongside Femme Fibre, she works as a Textile Designer at GraceTech Textiles, gaining experience in commercial textile development, production processes, and client-based design. She has also contributed to Copenhagen and Melbourne Fashion Week through volunteer and professional roles within the fashion industry.

These experiences inform a practice that moves between craft and industry, grounded in material exploration, slow making, and a continued interest in contemporary textile design.
